Mining and metallurgical enterprises in the Armenian province of Lori are likely to be contaminated by dangerous chemicals, especially copper. According to analyses, its level exceeds legal and hygienic limits. The industrial enterprises in question are located in proximity to people's homes. "The level of dioxins found in the samples from Alaverdi exceeds both European and Armenian standards, in some cases up to five times," according to Jitka Strakova, expert on toxic substances research on environmental pollution of Alaverdi, Akhtala and Teghut. Czech scientists further investigated the content of hazardous substances in the soil, river sediments, sand from playgrounds and human hair.
